Figures for 2020, as published by federal agencies in 2021
This page has the 2020 gross domestic product figure and the 2020 Census population for each US state and territory, plus the postal abbreviation for each US state, territory, and military region. BEA has released newer and revised GDP figures since then, so check BEA for the latest numbers.
Abbreviation: This is the two letter code that corresponds to each US state and territory. It’s used for mailing, and is commonly referenced in written communications.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP): This is the summation of the market value in US Dollars of all goods and services produced by the indicated US state or territory. It’s a figure commonly used and referenced by economists to understand the economic activity of a place.
Population: This is the resident population counted by the US Census Bureau in the decennial census, the latest of which took place in 2020.
This information was pulled from US government sources, which are listed below the charts. GDP figures are in current US dollars as first published, and BEA revises them over time.

Clearly, there are a few outlier states that make up a disproportionate amount of US population and GDP. California is by far the largest economic force in the US, with GDP about 1.8 times that of Texas, the next largest state by GDP and population. New York and Florida are other major players in both economy and population.
There are also a few US states with very small populations and correspondingly low gross domestic products. Those include Vermont, Wyoming, and Alaska. Population is strongly correlated with gross domestic product. One can make a further analysis of this trend by looking at gross domestic product per capita by dividing total GDP by population.
The following chart shows the District of Columbia, US territories and commonwealths, and one freely associated state. DC and the territories don't have voting representation in Congress like the 50 states do, which is a long-running political debate, including over statehood for Puerto Rico and DC.
The Marshall Islands is not a US territory. It is a sovereign country in a Compact of Free Association with the US, but it has a USPS abbreviation (MH) because it uses the US mail system.
| Territory | Abbreviation | 2020 GDP | 2020 Population |
| American Samoa | AS | 636,000,000 | 49,437 |
